A Brief History

The history of the First Baptist Church of Caney goes back to 1888.   A group of people from Baptist backgrounds decided to begin meeting on Saturday mornings and were given permission to meet in the Methodist Church building in Caney.   This church met in a variety of places during the first few years.   They were able to begin construction on their own building in 1893.   It was a one-room building with a bell-tower and was located on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Spring Street in Caney.

In 1921, the church decided to relocate and build a new structure on the corner of Third Avenue and Main Street in Caney.   The Church stayed in that location until 1995 when we sold the old building and began construction on the new facility located at 900 South Ridgeway Street.   Click here for a map showing the new location.

The church called Dan DeWitt to be its pastor in 2002.   Although he and his family moved here from Colorado, he grew up close to here in Oswego, KS.   If you would like to learn more about Dan and see what God has been doing in his life, click here.

From the time First Baptist first began constructing the new facility in 1995, they had a dream of someday expanding the building to include a "multi-purpose building" as a part of the church facility -- to give the church an even greater ministry to the community.    This dream has now become a reality!   They began the construction on this new addition to their building in 2005 and it was completed in late 2007.   If you would like to see about using the building for some event or activity, you can click here to see if the building is available.

The church expanded its commitment to ministering to the community in 2007 when it extended a call to Edgard Torres to be their youth pastor.    If you would like to learn more about Edgard and see what God has been doing in his life, click here.

Although our history started out as an attempt to begin a "Baptist" church in the community of Caney, our goal is not really to make more people to become "Baptists."   Our goal is to help people come to experience the mercy, love and compassion of Jesus Christ -- and, as they experience Him, to surrender their lives in obedience and faith.   So, whether you are excited about being a Baptist or not, we invite you to join with us as we attempt to spread the love and compassion of Jesus into the Caney Valley!
